An branch of Norwegian sinister metallic element legends Emperor, Zyklon was founded by guitarist/bassist Zamoth (aka Samoth, as he is known in Emperor), wHO wanted to focus on the more modern and fast-growing aspects of the latter band's style. Compared with Emperor, Zyklon has a more than hard-edged and less atmospherical or regal sound; its members have chosen the broader extreme metal tag, as opposed to black metal, to report their music. (They have too made a stop of distinguishing themselves from Zyklon-B, some other, earlier, Emperor branch.) Zyklon was founded in 1998, just their official lineup took a twosome of age to amply come together, set in the year 2000 with drummer Trym (also of Emperor) and bassist/lead guitar player Destructhor (Myrkskog) filling in the other instrumental slots. Their first-class honours degree album, Domain of Worms, came out on Candlelight Records in 2001 with Daemon from Limbonic Art manipulation lead-in vocals. The lyrics for Macrocosm of Worms were written all by one-time Emperor drummer Bard "Faustus" Eithun, further highlight the Emperor connexion.

Williams & Watts pay tribute to Ledger

Several of Heath Ledger's friends and former partners have paid tribute to the late actor by sharing their memories of him with Interview magazine.
According to Entertainment Tonight, actress Michelle Williams, who had a child with Ledger, said: "I think that the interesting thing about Heath, which maybe people have only really fully discovered in his death, is how vulnerable he was."
"You can pick up on it in his performances, but it's easy to overlook because he was so physical and beautiful and strong and masculine. But there was always that underlying sensitivity. That's who he was."
Williams also referred to Ledger's sleeping problems, saying: "For as long as I'd known him, he had bouts with insomnia. He had too much energy. His mind was turning, turning, turning - always turning."
Actress Naomi Watts, who once dated Ledger, told the magazine: "I think he wanted to be someone who was doing the observing - not the one being observed."
"He hated not being able to go about his life in an ordinary way. But I think that, deep down, he enjoyed that he was being recognised for his talent."
"I think he was starting to own that and that's the deepest tragedy, in terms of his work. He was just beginning to own it and embrace it," she said.
Television show host Ellen DeGeneres and actor Philip Seymour-Hoffman also paid tribute to the actor in the magazine.

Placido Domingo - Opera Manager Vincent Dies

Tito's tunes

Boston sports fans know our Red Sox [team stats] rock on the field. But what rocks the Sox? In a feature that will appear every Wednesday throughout the 2008 baseball season, Herald writer Tom Kielty talks with members of the team about their favorite music. And who better to kick things off than Red Sox manager Terry Francona?
Terry Francona calls the shots when the Sox are on the field, but his classic-rock roots are not something he shows in the clubhouse.
“I would probably pick something quiet,” said Francona, who’s not going to hit anyone with the blaring mix favored by slugger David Ortiz [stats]. “I’m getting old, and my taste is probably vastly different than the players.”

His first musical purchase?
“A 45,” Francona said. “ ‘Brandy’ by Looking Glass.”
He says his daughter helps him stock his iPod with “A lot of one-hit wonders to a lot of hard rock - AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple. And some softer stuff, depending on the mood I’m in.”
His first concert experience?
“Manfred Mann in Pittsburgh, PA, I was probably 17.”
And he knows who he wants to see next: Aerosmith.
“I’ve met Steven Tyler and I want to see him bad,” Francona said. “He knows it. He’s been here a couple of times, and I love the guy.”
The skipper recalled that he first heard Aerosmith “in high school with ‘Toys in the Attic.’ I’ve been a fan since. (Tyler) cracks me up. I think he’s awesome. That will be my next concert.”

Meet the Band: Tokyo Tramps

The band: Satoru Nakagawa (guitar, voice), Yukiko Fujii (bass), Kosei Fukuyama (drums)
The geography: All three members of Tokyo Tramps hail from Japan and live in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood.
The sound: Blues rock with a big nod to Bruce Springsteen

The back story: After finishing high school in Japan, singer and songwriter Nakagawa moved to Louisiana to explore his fondness for blues rock. He spent five years partying and playing music, which led to his expulsion (oops!) from the University of New Orleans. In 1996, he enrolled at Berklee College of Music to pursue his love of blues - without the distraction of Bourbon Street.
Tokyo Tramps is a trio of Japanese Berklee grads that came together in 1999 when Nakagawa asked his then-girlfriend Yukiko Fujii, now his wife of four years, to fill in on bass.
“I didn’t want to play with my partner,” Nakagawa said, “but my bass player left and I asked her to fill in. And then I couldn’t get rid of her!”
Recent Berklee grad Fukuyama joined last year after the Tramps’ original drummer returned to Japan.
“We didn’t have a drummer for three or four months so we did the acoustic, street performer thing in Harvard Square,” Nakagawa said. “We were also a wedding band and Kosei was hired for that. It was really lucky. I feel very fortunate.”
The name: “We didn’t know what to call ourselves,” Nakagawa said.
So he looked to the lyrics of Springsteen’s “Born to Run” for inspiration: “Tramps like us, baby we were born to run.”
The philosophy: Tokyo Tramps’ blues rock is not a soundtrack for depression. The trio’s songs convey messages of hope and happiness.
“I’m a Buddhist,” Nakagawa said, “which means you must become happy and recognize Buddhahood in yourself and in everybody around you. There is happiness in everybody, it’s just a matter of finding it. That’s what I do in my music.
“We have a word in Japanese that means turning poison into medicine,” Nakagawa said. “We all carry sadness and pain and agony and stuff, but there’s always a way to turn it into joy. All my musical heroes are able to do that with music. They really touch my heart. That’s why I became a musician - to repay a debt of gratitude. I’ve never met them in person, but I’m grateful, so I’d like to do the same with my music.”
The albums: Tokyo Tramps have released three albums: “Long Way From Home” (2000), “Bound for Glory” (2003) and “Lucky Jive Will Come Home on King’s Road” (May). The fourth will drop as soon as Fujii finishes the cover art.
The show: Tokyo Tramps play Church tomorrow, with Geezer and the Ten Foot Polecats.

Colombian hostage rescue heads to big screen

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Colombian movie director Simon Brand is teaming up with producers in Hollywood and his native country to bring to the big screen the story of last week's dramatic rescue of Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other hostages in Colombia.

Brand, whose credits include the 2006 crime thriller "Unknown" and Colombia's highest-grossing movie, romantic drama "Paradise Travel," is one of many filmmakers inside Hollywood and elsewhere vying for rights to the rescue mission.

He is working with Los Angeles-based production company Vertigo Entertainment ("The Departed," "The Grudge") and Colombian TV network and production outfit RCN, the latter of which is seen as giving their project the inside track on securing rights.

Vertigo previously teamed up with RCN to clinch remake rights to the Colombian film "Al Final del Espectro," and has set up the project at Universal Pictures with the working title "At the End of the Spectra."

Brand is aiming to both develop and direct the hostage rescue project, which has no writer on board yet. The producers also are looking to meet with financiers and studios in the coming weeks.

Betancourt, a former presidential candidate of Colombian and French descent, had been held captive along with three Americans and a group of Colombian police officers -- some since 2002 -- by rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

Colombian military forces took acting lessons and spent months planting themselves among the rebels before culminating in a mission that saw the rebels tricked into thinking the captives were being transferred to another camp.

The feature will tell the story from three points of view -- the American, the French and the Colombian -- and recreate the rescue. The project also will be set partially in France, and a French production partner is likely to come on board.
